An article on Holy Redeemer Church in Montrose. This church was recently dedicated by Cardinal Mahoney. This was a new church built to replace a mission church.
As with the trend in new churches this picture demonstrates a game you can play. Like the popular picture game Where’s Waldo? we now have a similar quest Where’s the Tabernacle?” This version of the game seems really difficult and I have not figured it out yet.
Maybe it is just me, but when I see this crucifix it looks like the nails fell out of his hands and Christ is falling off the Cross. I realize the trend in church art is to try to deemphasize the Crucifixion and to emphasize the resurrection. But I don’t think the artistic efforts that are halfway between these two events have been very successful. Maybe a bloodless Crucifixion fits our culture which see itselft as sinless.

Maybe a bloodless Crucifixion fits our culture which sees itself as sinless.
which would also explain the missing Tabernacle. i mean, c’mon. who really needs Christ when they have no sin?
Kind of looks like an Olympic Diver coming up off the diving board. Very strange.
I agree, this half-on/ half-off thing is just goofy… besides Jesus didn’t resurrect off the cross! :-/
This is so dumb.
Funny I thought Jesus was nailed to the cross. I guess I was wrong. The “real” Jesus must have been suspended in mid-air in front of the cross to make it look like he was dying on it. (NOTE TO THE HUMOR IMPAIRED: This is sarcasm.)
once a saint walked into a church and saw a vision of christ-he knew instantly it was a demonic image becasue there were no marks on hands or feet[i forget wether it was st martin of tours or st gregory of tours, i think it was 1 of them]
I’ve heard arguments that a real crucifix is too scary for children. (which of course I don’t susbcribe to). This image of Jesus I find terrifying. Doesn’t he look like he should be saying “BOOOOOO”?
At least they get a cross… not like our Church.
Victor,
I see they play “Where’s the Tabernacle” at your church also. Someone coming their might think that the source and summit of the faith is the pipe organ or a holly wreath.
Well, Victor, as some consolation, at least you have a PIPE organ not like our church, which “forgot” to factor in speakers for the organ when we moved into our new church this year. Our electronic organ, which sounded OK in the old church, sounds awful in the new church.
On the upside, we did move our wonderful old crucifix with nailed Corpus from the old church to the new…..
So how much theology is erased by having Jesus remove himself from the cross?
Last Sunday, the first after I saw The Passion, I thought how relatively un-sanitized our cross is. The wood carving brings out some of the muscular stress, and the limbs seem sort of thin and abused.
And I’m not sorry to say that Jeff’s game wouldn’t work very well at our church.
This looks like liberal (modernist heresy) protestants from the 1950s.
If the foundations be destroyed, what shall the righteous do?
I found these wonderful articles on Prayer, on Bible Study, and on Holiness by that great Anglican bishop of two centuries ago, John Charles Ryle, over at the http://www.torontochristianbooks.com site. Well, well worth reading!
Here’s the linking quote from their index page:
“We also warmly recommend these superb writings, "Holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord." by John Charles Ryle, "Bible Reading" by John Charles Ryle, and "A Call To Prayer" by John Charles Ryle, to our readers. You’ll find a selection of J.C. Ryle’s books below them, on the same pages. They make for some of the most profitable, edifying, encouraging and uplifting Christian books available, and are classics which have stood the test of time!”
Wasn’t the ‘historical Jesus’ merely tied to a cross with velvety ribbons and politely asked to die (which he graciously agreed to do for the convenience of his enemies, whom he loved,) after Pilate had subjected him to a ‘great feather tickling’ at the hands of the Roman soldiers?
Mr. Jester (or may I call you Curt?,) perhaps you could do a parody catechism of Modern Enlightened Theology, and add a link to it from Sister Mary Biko’s blog?
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh…………….
