LONDON – Starting next year, British sperm and egg donors will lose their right to anonymity and their offspring will be given more information about their genetic parents once they turn 18.
The British government announced the change Tuesday after two years of public consultation about what information should be open to children conceived through donations of sperm, eggs and embryos.
…British Health Minister Melanie Johnson said donors would continue to have no financial or legal responsibility for children born of their cells, and would not be forced to meet their donor child.
…The proposed change will provide them with what’s called a “pen portrait” of their genetic parent, including eye and hair colour, occupation and religion.
Brave new world indeed. They spent two years arguing about whether to have these pen portraits provided. Probably much longer then they spent arguing about the morality of In Vitro Fertilization.
