In the Envoy Encore blog today Carl Olson mentioned a church called “Scum of the Earth.” The Scum of the Earth church has a web site. Their mission statement appears to be standard Protestant fare and the sermon they have posted is both orthodox and funny.
I don’t know what would be worse; to be accepted or rejected by scum of the earth. To be excommunicated by scum of the earth would not be exactly something you would want to put on your resume.
Update: [Via Relasped Catholic]
“Scum of the Earth (that’s the actual name of the church) founded by the Christian band Five Iron Frenzy says, ‘They want to sing, they don’t want to be sung to. They don’t want to go to church to listen to a sermon, watch a drama skit and go home without talking to anyone. They want to offer a spare bedroom to a stranger who got kicked out of the house. Most of all, they come to Scum of the Earth Church to connect with kindred souls.’

I like this!
Oh No. Scum of the Earth is preaching the Gospel to people deemed untouchable by ‘standard’ churches. I’ve met these guys and they are incredible. They are going where Jesus would go if He were here today. Let’s not forget Jesus hung out with tax collectors, prostitutes and smelly fishermen. I was just reading in 1 Corinthians about uniting as churches…this is sad to find things like “Standard Protestant fare” on your page. I mean, shouldn’t we be reaching out towards the same goal? Isn’t our God and Jesus the same? There is a song that goes “Savior of the prostitutes, drunkards, rapists, and the gays.” Here is Christ plain and simple… reaching the untouchable and here is a church doing there job. Don’t let dogma stand in the way of salavtion. I challenge you to look deeper into scum of the earth… and what they are doing in the lives of people afraid to step foot in chapels, cathedrals and sanctuaries. God isn’t limited to buildings or the way someone looks. Besides, we are in this world not of it.
11To this very hour we go hungry and thirsty, we are in rags, we are brutally treated, we are homeless. 12We work hard with our own hands. When we are cursed, we bless; when we are persecuted, we endure it; 13when we are slandered, we answer kindly. Up to this moment we have become the scum of the earth, the refuse of the world.
1 Corinthians 4
I go to the Scum of the Earth Church.
