SAN DIEGO — Local law-enforcement officials say that a woman was robbed in a Logan Heights church Friday.
The 65-year-old woman had more than $500 stolen out of her purse while she was in Christ the King Catholic Church on 32nd Street. The woman had taken the money out of the bank for a weekend trip, she told San Diego police.
Authorities say that the thief entered the Logan Heights church around 10 a.m. and spoke briefly to the woman, asking her if she had any extra rosary beads. She told him she didn’t. Shortly afterward, the thief reached into her purse, took the money and ran out of the church.

Sadly, we had a small spate of purse-snatching while parishoners went to Communion at my parish a couple of years ago. The women don’t leave their purses in the pews when they go down to Communion anymore. After our priest announced it, people not only watched their things, they started watching out for each other. The thief either was thwarted by this and moved on to another church after that, or simply stopped doing it.
What kind of person would steal purses in a CHURCH? Let’s pray that people like this repent of their ways and turn to God.
there was an incident similar to the one Christ describes down this way, a few years ago, at the Cathedral in downtown DC. Same results. It feels silly to me to take a purse up to Communion, but that’s what people had to do….
oh dear, what a typo! CHRIS, dear, please don’t let it go to your head.
I see I put our old URL down, too. sigh. I might as well just head on over to the pillory.
I thought I was getting an extravagant compliment that I far from deserve! LOL!
While I am certainly sorry for the robbery and hope the perpetrator is caught, I have to wonder why on earth anyone would carry that kind of cash around on her person in Logan Heights. That area of town is not exactly La Jolla. I hope she considers traveller’s checks next time.
