(09/30/03) CLIFTON – The Diocese of Paterson is very upset over a billboard on Route 46 west in Clifton that reads, “Catholic yet? Why not?” While the billboard seems to be promoting Catholicism, diocesan officials are at odds with the group that is behind the message. The controversial billboard, along with similar ones in Metuchen, Bradley Beach and Newark, were paid for by the St. Louis Catholic Education Center in Pompton Lakes.
The Paterson Diocese says the St. Louis Catholic Center contradicts many of its beliefs. The center says its purpose is to educate people about what it calls the “true teachings” of the Roman Catholic Church. Included in those teachings is the idea that no one outside the Catholic faith can be saved and go to heaven.

Perhaps the sign will awaken those suffering from Narcoma of the spirit. It is doubtful that the entire message is read by passing motorists…perhaps they only see Catholic.
Even so, this was a distinct improvement over their original draft for the billboard, which read “Catholic yet? No? See you in Hell, perfidious suckas!!!”
