Compaq FAQ: Where is the ANY Key? (FAQ2859)
This is not a key. When you are instructed to press any key, this means you can press any of the keys on the keyboard (such as the Enter key, the R key, or the space bar).

This reminded me so something that happened while I was NAS Patuxent River, MD. A couple of sailors in my command were taking a computer tutorial on DOS. It would ask them questions and then they would have to type in the response. They got stuck when it asked them to enter date. They tried all the formats such as mm/dd/yy, dd/mm/yy, yyyy/mm/dd, etc for the the days date and it still would not go on. That is when they came and got me to help. I walked over and then entered DATE, much to there chagrin.

It reminds me of the guy who pushed the button on his CD-ROM drive, and was disappointed that the only thing that happened was the drink holder came out!
Do you remember hearing of a woman (this is maybe 15 or 20 years ago) who couldn’t summon help in a fire because her phone didn’t have an ’11’ button? Supposedly this led to the use of the phrase nine-one-one for emergency rather than nine-eleven. (I know it sounds like an urban legend, but I’m sure I read this in a reasonably reliable publication, like the Chicago Tribune. Which is reasonably reliable except when it discusses the Pope, the Catholic Church etc.)

I ran the utility to create “recovery discs” on my new laptop. It aborted. I registered and emailed tech support for a set of discs. I waited. I emailed again. I waited. Over 3 months, including two emails to the office of the CEO, Mark Hurd, this produced…NO EFFECTIVE COMPAQ SUPPORT!
My laptop is useless without recovery discs and I can’t get normal support, escalated support, or support from the office of the CEO.
Will I ever recommend or buy Compaq or HP again? Not in THIS lifetime.
