The crew over at the Shrine of the Holy Whapping just gets better and better. I always look forward to their daily church/saint whap up, but today they review my favorite comedian trio – The Marx Brothers and my favorite movie of theirs – A Night at the Opera.
I am a connoisseurs of all things Marx Brothers. In high school I read everything I could find about Groucho, Chico, and Harpo (and the strait men Marx’s Gummo and Zeppo) and even wrote a school paper on them. I dressed as Groucho at a party once and would pull the Harpo leg grab maneuver on unsuspecting friends. Along with Matthew give me some of these black-and-white comedy stars any day. Besides the Marx Brothers I also greatly enjoy W.C. Fields who I played once in a show.
Groucho Marx’s was also extremely funny in his later years on the game show You Bet Your Life. I loved to watch as his zingers went way over the heads of the unsuspecting contestants. One of my favorite lines from the Marx Brother’s is:
I shot an elephant in my underwear the other day, how he got in my underwear I’ll never know.
Here is a parody I wrote a year ago called A Night at the Jesus Seminar.
