The Catholic Church is not the only place that has suffered under mushy emotional liturgical music with theologically dumbed down lyrics but this effect is pervasive.
Star Trek and all of the other spinoffs could be counted on for music that fit the theme of exploration of space. Ever since 2001: A space odyssey we could expect grand symphonic music to represent this genre. But after recently hearing the theme song for Enterprise I could have sworn it was written my Marty Haugen and was right out of a modern hymn book by OCP or GIA. It’s saccharine sound could have been performed by Survivor.
This is not a parody and is the actual lyrics for Enterprise.
“Faith of the Heart” written by Diane Warren and performed by Russell Watson.
It’s been a long road getting from there to here
It’s been a long time, but my time is finally near
and I can feel the change in the wind right now
Nothing’s in my way
and they’re not gonna hold me down no more
No they’re not gonna hold me down
Cause I’ve got faith of the heart I’m going where my heart will take me
I’ve got faith to believe I can do anything
I’ve got strength of the soul and no one’s gonna bend or break me
I can reach any star, I’ve got faith, I’ve got I’ve got I’ve got faith… faith of the heart
It’s been a long night trying to find my way
Been through the darkness, now I’ve finally had my day
and I will see my dream come alive at last I will touch the sky
And they’re not gonna hold me down no more no they’re not gonna change my mind
Cause I’ve got faith of the heart I’m going where my heart will take me
I’ve got faith to believe I can do anything
I’ve got strength of the soul and no one’s gonna bend or break me
I can reach any star, I’ve got faith, I’ve got I’ve got I’ve got faith… faith of the heart
I’m going where the winds so cold, to see the darkest days
But now the winds are free…only winds have changed
I’ve been to the fire and I’ve been to the rain
But I’ll be fine cause I’ve got faith… faith of the heart
Cause I’ve got faith of the heart I’m going where my heart will take me
I’ve got faith to believe I can do anything
I’ve got strength of the soul and no one’s gonna bend or break me
I can reach any star, I’ve got , I’ve got I’ve got I’ve got faith….faith of the heart
faith of the heart I’m going where my heart will take me
I’ve got faith to believe and no one’s gonna bend or break
I can reach any star, cause I’ve got faith, cause I’ve got faith, faith of the heart

I rather enjoy the series, and the theme song. But that’s just me.
The song and the show are great and I am sad it is wrapping up now in 2005
yes, the words are a little cheesy, but I do like the montage that they show with the opening credits. Perhaps they thought they were running the instrumental theme music idea into the ground.
Is it just me or are they just flogging this franchise to death? I have not seen many episodes of Enterprise that I hadn’t already seen on the other shows We gave up when the commercial was, “T’Pol must mate….or die! My little boy’s favorite character is the dog.
I liked the Voyager theme the best.
When the first episode aired the first time and I heard the theme song, I sat there in slack-jawed amazement at the astonishing badness of it. It really defies attempts at parody.
The worst problem with “Enterprise” though, from a long time fan’s standpoint, is the continuity catastrophe. Vulcans as the Clarkeian Overlords of humanity’s space program? Mind melding as a sexual disorder, complete with mental venereal disease? Maybe the last episode of the series will reveal that we’ve been in the Goateed Spock Universe all along. Or maybe Dean Stockwell will show up and tell Scott Bakula that it’s all been just another “leap”.
When a rock band starts doing Diane Warren songs, you know that they’re creatively bankrupt. Evidentally, the same applies to other kinds of franchises.
I’ve disliked that song since episode 1. They should have stuck with the instrumentals and star-laden opening sequence. It just doesn’t seem like Star Trek otherwise.
Enterprise Theme
In order to continue to grow and connect with people and the world, I like to keep an open mind about issues, even though I certainly have my own opinion on things.
In keeping with this, I can understand how some people aren’t happy with the theme chosen for the newest Star Trek saga, Enterprise and that is certainly their prerogative.
However, my personal opinion is that, even though the song itself isn’t new, it gives a fresh sound to the show.
It also reflects Captain Archer’s yearning to become a space pioneer and his achievement of that dream.
Even more importantly, it is relevant to this day and age when many of us covet that same dream of reaching beyond our world to expand our connection with the cosmos.
The words of the song can be applied to something small or big, depending on who you are, what your dream is, and what you seek to achieve.
Let’s have a little tolerance, folks. It’s a great song by a talented, versatile artist (who I found out is a tenor and records classical music as well!).
Bottom line is, we have yet another Star Trek series and Gene Roddenberry’s dream lives on. So let’s not be petty and squabble about the theme song. Instead, let’s keep ourselves united in the true spirit of Trek.
i think yous need to get alife this song is the buiseness

the theme song rox! the show is great. put your continuity bibles in the hotel room drawer and try to enjoy life!
The theme song is horrid. The show is terrible. The writers and all responsible for this
disaster should be dragged from their homes and beaten. It seems that the intention of the producers of this show was to alienate the core audience in a ridiculous attempt to get people who aren’t into Star Trek to watch this awful swill. Good luck, a-holes.
Personally, if you dont associate the theme song with Enterprise, its a really good song on its own.. the story itself is decent, but not ground breaking, it’s still fun to watch, with the exception of the occasional ultra crappy episode *like the one where they let an entire race die, and leave it to the inferior race*
Yep, the series is finishing up with the last season here in Australia.
I like the theme song. I don’t know what the big ruckus is all about. Who cares if it’s totally different to the other Trek series?
I didn’t like the theme to begin with but since my kids picked up on it (ages 8 & 9) it’s the only Star Trek series they’ll watch and I watch it with them just like I watched the original series with my Dad in the 70’s with it’s cheesy theme.
Us oldies have become fussy as the producers have attempted to leave our comfort zone and do something different.
Appreciate Enterprise like we did as kids! It’s a shame the show was cancelled – us fans are too spoilt!
