The failure to pay a speeding ticket has derailed the nomination of a high-ranking NARAL Pro-Choice America official for a seat on the New Jersey Supreme Court.
As a black Cuban-American, partner with a large New Jersey law firm and state board chairperson for NARAL Pro-Choice America, Zulima Farber had been labeled by many Democrats in New Jersey as the perfect choice to replace retiring state Supreme Court Justice James H. Coleman, Jr., the only African-American on the high court. Farber appealed not only to blacks in the state, but also to Hispanics. She fled Cuba and settled in New Jersey when she was 17.
But, Democratic Governor Jim McGreevey, already facing record-low approval ratings statewide, withdrew his support for Farber after it was disclosed that a bench warrant had been issued for her arrest in January for failure to pay a speeding ticket.
