Thousands of Mexican farmers are facing an agricultural
crisis, and it’s not a drought or lack of sufficient farm hands. Scores of growers,
many in Sonora, say they’re being forced out of business because of the North
American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). Many claim NAFTA is allowing U.S. farm
goods to flood the Mexican market. Many small Mexican farmers say they just
can’t compete.
Most Mexican Farmers News 13 spoke to around Hermosillo,
Sonora still till small plots of land with donkeys, and follow ancient traditions
such as sowing seeds barefoot. However, since NAFTA went into effect in 1994,
thousands have been forced out of work because growers can’t compete with U.S.
products spurred by advanced machinery, infrastructure, and ultimately in price.
