Defacto Democratic Sen. Jim Jeffords, I-Vt., cost the GOP
control of the Senate when he jumped ship in May 2001 and voted to make Sen. Tom
Daschle, D-S.D., majority leader.
But now, with Republicans taking over and Jeffords faced
with minority status, Vermont’s man of integrity apparently wants back
in.
Reports the Washington Times:
“According to a senior Senate leadership source, the
election results were barely in before Mr. Jeffords’ office put out feelers to
his former party’s leaders. The message? That the Vermonter would be happy to
caucus with the GOP � so long as he retained his committee
chairmanship.”
So far GOP reaction has been
underwhelming:
“Republican leaders rightly rolled their eyes,” the Times
said.
