Measure 23, awaiting Oregon voters on the November 5th
ballot, is the nation’s first “universal health care plan” purporting to give
full medical insurance — no co-payments, no deductibles — to all the state’s
residents. [Full
story]
Growing up in Portland in my formative years I can easily believe that Oregon
is the least churched state, especially being the only state with legal
euthanasia. What a mighty faith anybody would have to believe in a universal
health care plan with no payments or deductibles. Such a thing would certainly
be a governmental miracle, if they could pull it off. England has tried it and
people fly to India for health care vacations because they couldn’t wait for the
surgery or were considered to old to receive it. Canada has done it and luckily
they only have to come to the US for undelivered health care needs. Tennessee
has tried a version of it and they are scrambling for ways to pay for it. The
only way this would be possible is with a resurgence of the Catholic Hospital
where salaries are not a concern and people are dedicated to the love of God and
Neighbor. The secular version can never work because without a love for God they
can never have the full sacrificial love required for the amount of time and
care required. We have lost the idea of communities that help to take care of
those people in our communities that can’t afford health care. The government
can never replace the efficiency and effectiveness of people helping out other
people directly with time and/or money. The only way government will provide
equal health care for all is if they make everybody’s health care
rotten.

not believe in nothing. They believe in anything.” G.K. Chesterton
